Trump Faces Falling Approval, Pushes Tariffs Despite Opposition

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows President Trump’s approval has dropped to 40%, the lowest since his return to office. While 83% of Republicans still back him, support among independents and Democrats remains low, reflecting growing polarization. The decline comes amid criticism of Trump’s handling of the economy and immigration.

At the same time, Trump has signed sweeping new tariffs — between 15% and 41% — on imports from over 67 countries, effective Aug. 7. Allies like the EU and Japan face moderate hikes, while others like Syria and Myanmar will see much steeper rates. A second order raises tariffs on Canadian goods from 25% to 35% for non-compliance with trade agreements. Some countries, including Taiwan, are still negotiating for better terms.

White House officials suggest more deals may be announced before the tariffs take effect
